Abstract

Objective:To examine the efficacy and safety of anastrozole (Arimidex, Arimidex XR) compared with tamoxifen in the treatment of breast cancer with anastrozole-induced estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer (ER-A+BC) in postmenopausal women. Methods: Anastrozole (Arimidex, Arimidex XR) was evaluated in 28 postmenopausal women with ER-A+BC diagnosed at least 2 months after initiation of tamoxifen for the treatment of patients with postmenopausal ER-A+BC. A total of 16 patients were treated with Aromasin (5 mg) and 10 patients were treated with tamoxifen (25 mg). All patients were followed up for 5 years after treatment. The primary endpoint was the overall survival (OS) at 5 years. Results: Aromasin (5 mg) significantly improved OS rates in the total population compared with tamoxifen (p<0.001). On the contrary, tamoxifen (25 mg) did not improve OS rates in the total population. The median OS at 5 years was 26.8 vs. 23.3, and the median OS at 5 years was 26.2 vs. 25.7 years. Aromasin (5 mg) showed a better effect in terms of OS in the total population than tamoxifen (p<0.001). Conclusion: Aromasin (5 mg) is superior to tamoxifen (25 mg) in terms of OS in the total population. However, it can be an alternative treatment option in the postmenopausal women with ER-A+BC, and can be used as adjuvant therapy for adjuvant treatment in ER-A+BC patients.
